Displaying Math Notation

  • We have two ways of displaying math: inline and display.
  • We either use display or inline depending on where we want to display our math notation.

Inline Math

  • To display inline math, we put our markdown between single dollar signs $...$.
  • For example, this is an example of inline math: .
$2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 2 \times 6$
  • We often use inline math when we want to display math notation in line with our text.
    • Some examples may include: writing or -intercept.

Display Math

  • In display math, the math is more centered and larger than inline.
  • It is often intended when displaying math that is more likely to be important or intended to grab your attention, which can be formulae or large math expressions
  • It is done by writing math inside double dollar signs $$...$$.
$$ 2^4 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 $$
  • They can also be used to typeset much complex expressions like matrices, systems of equations, or even table of values using environments.
  • Unlike inline math, it can also span multiple lines and still display normally.
$$
x^3 + 1 =
(x+1)(
x^
2 -x +
1)
$$
