  • It summarizes the ideas of the researcher’s study.
  • It contains the most essential variables in the study and helps the researcher maintain the direction of their research.
  • It should not be too short or too long.
  • It should contain the least possible words that it can possibly have.
  • It should be analytically descriptive and mirror the objective of the research.

Characteristics of a Research Title

Do’s and Don’ts in Writing a Research Title

  1. Avoid catchy, cute, and harmonious titles.
  2. Do not be vague.
  3. The title should not be general.
    It should be precise but not necessarily short
  4. Must be stated in declarative form (in phrase), not interrogative form.
  5. If the title exceeds one line, it must be stated in “V-form”.
  6. Do not use “Study of”, “Analysis of”, “Investigation of”, “Implication of”, “A Comparative Study of”, “An Assessment of”, “Inquiry”, and other similar constructions.
  7. No title shall be written in not more than three lines regardless the number of words.
  8. May reveal how the paper will be organized
  9. Indicate accurately the subject and the scope of the study
  10. Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate the reader’s interest.
  11. Use current nomenclature from the field of study.
    Identify key variables, both dependent and independent.

Research Variables

It simply refers to a person, place, thing, or phenomenon that you are trying to measure, explain, or describe

They can either be:

  • Quantifiable: can be measured numerically
  • Describable: can be analyzed descriptively

Types of Research Variables

  • Independent Variable (IV)
    • It refers to the TOPIC or the PROBLEM the study aims to solve. Further, it affects the dependent variable.
  • Dependent Variable (DV)
    • It receives the effect of the independent variable or it is affected by the independent variable. Furthermore, it refers to the SAMPLES or respondents of the study.
