What is a Hazard?

Hazard

  • It is anything that can hurt you or anyone else

Risk

  • It is the possibility that a hazard might harm someone.

  • Some examples of hazards include:

    • slippery floors, disorganized cables running on the floor (physical hazard)
    • computers and electronic equipment (electrical hazard)
    • cleaning chemicals and solvents, compressed gas for dust removal (chemical hazard)

The 5s of Visual Management

Five S

  • Also known as 5S.
  • These are the five Japanese terms used to describe the five steps of visual arrangement.
    Namely, they are: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, shitsuke.
    • Seiri (sort)
      • Sort and put things in order.
      • Remove and discard what is not needed.
      • Keep what is needed instead.
    • Seiton (straighten)
      • Keep orderliness and proper arrangement.
      • Place things in a way that they can be easily reached.
      • There is a place for everything, and everything must be in its place.
    • Seiso (shine)
      • Keep workplace clean and polished..
      • There must not be any trash or dirt in the workplace.
    • Seiketsu (standardize)
      • Maintain cleanliness after cleaning.
      • Cleaning must be part of everyone’s work.
    • Shitsuke (sustain)
      • Maintain standards for commitment.
      • Keep the facility safe, efficient and in order in any day of the year.
