Objectives

  • Identify common trends and emerging issues in ICT
  • There are four common trends in ICT nowadays, namely convergence, social media, mobile technologies, assistive media.
    • Convergence
      • A concept used to describe the completion of multiple tasks on a single device.
      • It is a new trend emerged as a result of recent advancements in capabilities of our current technology.
    • Social Media
      • It refers to the method of communication where users create, distribute and exchange indeas through virtual communities and networks.
      • Examples of common social media platforms are: Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.
    • Mobile Technology
      • Recent advancements in this form of technology allows for more advanced applications such as navigation, internebt browsing, instant messaging, gaming, and video conferencing.
        • These advancements also gave a significant increase in general productivity.
    • Assistive Media
      • These are technology designed to help with persons with disabilities.
      • It allows people with impairments carry out tasks that would otherwise be challenging or impossible.

Emerging Issues in ICT

  • With the emergence of new technology, several issues have also arised from the use or misuse of these technologies.
    • Cybercrime
      • It can be defined as criminal activity done in the virtual space/cyberspace.
      • They range from pornography, electronic fraud, cyber-stalking, and terrorism.
    • Addiction
      • The wrong use of technology, especially the Internet may lead to bad behavioral patterns, such as video game addiction.
    • Health and Safety Issues
      • Some ergonomic hazards may arise from prolonged or improper computer use.
        • This can lead to several health and safety issues such as:
          • musculoskeletal disrders: carpal-tunnel, rendonitis, backache
          • visual/auditory problems: eyestrain, dizziness, temporary hearing loss.
    • Social Skills:
      • Overreliance on digital communication may affect our ability to enhance and improve our interpersonal and social skills.
