Speech Context

  • It refers to the situation or the environment and the circumstances in which communication occurs.

Types of Speech Context

  • Intrapersonal
    • Intra “inside” + person
    • The speaker acts both as the sender and receiver of the message.
    • The message is made up of your thoughts and feelings
    • The channel is your brain, which also processes what you are thinking and feeling
    • There is also feedback.
      • As you talk to yourself, you discard certain ideas and replace them with others.
  • Interpersonal
    • Inter “between” + person
    • A communication between and among people
    • According to Solomon and Theiss (2013):
      • The Inter- part suggests how this type of communication connects people.
      • The -personal part suggests that your unique qualities as a person matter in this type of communication.
    • There are 4 types of interpersonal communication, namely dyad, small group, public, and mass communication.
      • Dyad: communication that occurs between 2 people.
      • Small Group: communication that involves 3-10 people in a face-to-face interaction.
      • Public: communication between you and in front of a group or audience.
        • It can be informational or persuasive.
        • The speaker may also use additional visual channels (eg. PowerPoint)
      • Mass Communication: communication that takes place in television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, the Internet, and other types of media.
