Adaptation

  • It is the change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
  • It can also refer to the action of process of adapting or the process of changing in order to suit in different conditions.
    • It enhances the fitness of survival of everyone
  • For an organism to adapt, it must be physically fit and viable at all stages of development for it to be able to survive.

Types of Adaptation

  • Structural: physical features of the organism
    • Example: penguin blubber to protect itself from freezing temperatures.
  • Behavioral: acquired/inherited/learned behavior
    • Example: bears hibernate to preserve energy in cold temperatures.
  • Physiological: permits organisms to perform special functions
    • Example: secreting venom, slime, and other special abilities
